One of the most important advances in joint replacement has been the development of muscle- and tendon-sparing surgical approaches.
For many patients undergoing hip replacement, I utilize the Direct Anterior Approach, which allows the hip joint to be replaced by working between natural muscle planes rather than detaching major muscles or tendons.
For many knee replacement patients, I utilize a muscle-sparing Subvastus approach that preserves the quadriceps tendon and minimizes disruption of the extensor mechanism whenever appropriate.
Preserving muscles and tendons may help reduce surgical trauma, decrease postoperative pain, facilitate earlier mobility, and support a faster functional recovery. While every patient heals differently, minimizing unnecessary soft tissue disruption is one important component of modern rapid recovery.
Modern Opioid-Sparing Pain Management
Pain control has changed dramatically over the past several years.
Historically, recovery after joint replacement often relied heavily on opioid pain medications. While opioids remain an important option for some patients, modern pain management focuses on reducing reliance on these medications whenever possible through a comprehensive multimodal approach.
My opioid-sparing joint replacement program combines several strategies that work together to improve comfort, including:

However, same-day discharge is not appropriate for everyone.
